December to Remember: Avalanche December at a Glance

By Maeve Hushman, Staff Writer

The Avalanche’s December was cut short by COVID-19 as was a large chunk of the league’s. Five teams including my favorite Toronto Maple Leafs have opted to postpone the games until after the holidays due to COVID-19 concerns. By the Avalanche’s last game against the Nashville Predators, they had five players out due to COVID-19. So, with December games coming to an end, let’s take a look at the Avalanche’s hot December.

With the 10 games the Avalanche played in December they went 7-2-1. Nathan MacKinnon re-joined the line-up and the offense was on fire. In three straight games they scored 7 goals. However, they began their December with a blowout 8-3 loss to the Leafs and ended it with a 5-2 loss to Nashville.

What to Do When You’re Alone for Christmas

By Sofia Flores, Staff Photographer/ Writer

Some of us will be surrounded by loved ones this Christmas and will have some company to celebrate with. However, there are also some that will be alone this Christmas.

A lot of the time, being alone on Christmas is seen from a negative point of view, it has been evident in the media that there is a stigma on loneliness. Little did you know, there are some positives that come from being alone on Christmas.

I have included some tips for those of you that need ideas on how to spend your Christmas. I hope you have a day filled with joy, see you in the new year!

1. Do Something That You Enjoy

A great way to start off the day, especially Christmas day, is to do something that you enjoy. For some it is painting, and for others it may be binge-watching Netflix or having a movie day! Whatever it is, do it! What will put you in a better mood than doing what you love!

2. Treat Yourself

Don’t hold back, and treat yourself! You want a new coat? Buy it! Wanna binge watch your new show? Watch it! Don’t feel guilty about treating yourself on your special day. You deserve it.

3. Stay Off Social Media

If you plan on having a relaxed, fun-filled day; stay off of social media. Seeing your Christmas-themed feed will most likely lead to sadness and feeling lonely. Take this opportunity to have a social media detox and put your mental-health first.

4. Write Goals For 2022

This time will be perfect to focus on your goals for next year. Take advantage of the peace and quiet and really reflect on the goals you want to set for yourself. Remember: put you and your health first.

5. Volunteer

It has been proven that helping others puts you in a better mood. It makes you focus on others and not on the negative feelings that might be creeping in, such as loneliness. There are many ways you can help others such as volunteering at a food bank or giving meals to the people who are homeless.

Are You Living Busy or Busy Living?

By Vivian Pham, Staff Writer

(CC0 1.0)

There’s a famous line in one of Bob Dylan’s song in the 1965 album Bringing It All Back, It’s Alright, Ma, that said: “That he not busy being born is busy dying.” This indicates that if you have a busy life, you’re living the right life. Yet have you realized the paradox of modern life? The more we throw ourselves into countless nights preparing for a project, working overtime on the weekends, etc., the more we lose control over our life.

A catchphrase from people who chose to focus on their work and put aside entertaining as well as life experience is “sorry, I’m busy.” We live in a time where busyness is becoming the scale of success. A businessman spending 2-3 extra hours meeting with clients to help finding new business partners, an office worker working overtime everyday trying to be honored “employee of the year” in order to get a promotion, or a freelancer having 2-3 jobs at the same time to pay the bills, all these examples are no doubt hard works and efforts, but are they really meaningful?

A study of Harvard Business Review showed that most workers spend 80% of their day on activities that seem to make them busy but actually don’t, and they fail to justify whether that activity boosts productivity or not. They admit the purpose of getting busy is simply to fill up those 24 hours.

Luckily, the fastest way to get out of that vicious busying cycle is to ask ourselves: does our busyness satisfy our needs? As long as you feel productive and be able to control your busy schedule, then you’re busy living and enjoying that busyness. But on the contrary, if you just pretend to be busy for others and to make you feel like being productive, then you’re fantasizing yourself and maybe you should reorganize your “busy” schedule.

Notable Opinions the Editor Shares: Kindle Paperwhite Review

By Morgan Jacobus, Editor in Chief

Hey everyone, it’s the EIC back again with another recommendation. Since we have already covered my favorite stationery, I thought an appropriate article in time for the holidays is a product recommendation of mine: the Kindle Paperwhite. Who knows? It could make a great gift for that special reader in your life. Plus, if you want to treat yourself to one, it is lovely to curl under a blanket with (if you have festive jammies you get bonus points).

After all, being an editor involves quite a bit of reading, particularly articles, but I also consider myself an avid reader in general. Ask any of my staff members, and they will say that before meetings I am usually reading on my kindle. I carry it practically everywhere with me, and it helps me read more whenever I have some extra time to kill. Without any further ado, here is my official review.

Product Review: Kindle Paperwhite

I used to be an avid bookworm growing up, but then life and schoolwork got in the way. I used to read so many books, then I hardly read any books outside of my books for school, until I decided to make a change. At the beginning of this year, I made a goal to read more books, and I have read 49 books this year so far, which I owe to my Kindle Paperwhite.

I had a Kindle Fire since about 2012, and it worked just fine, but I found that I wasn’t reading on the kindle I already had because the screen would strain my eyes. However, I heard that the paperwhite isn’t like a screen.

The reason I chose to upgrade was primarily because of its “300 ppi glare-free display that reads like real paper even in bright sunlight.” And let me tell you, I tried scouring review sites to see if it actually looked like a book page rather than a screen. It seemed like it was, but there was a part of me that doubted. How could an electronic device actually look like paper rather than a computer screen?

After reading with it religiously for about almost a year, I can tell you that it truly does look like a book page. When I first received it and activated it, my mama and I were in shock. How can it even do that? I don’t know how it works, but it does. You have the option of backlighting the screen if you are reading in a dark or low light environment, but you can also read without turning the light on at all to get the experience of what looks like an actual piece of paper. Even with using the backlighting feature at night, I found it doesn’t strain my eyes and I am able to read longer.

Though part of the advertisable qualities of the paperwhite was its smaller size and being waterproof, what truly appealed to me was the screen. However, I will say that the size was smaller than I expected. It fits nicely in my hand, and I can bring it so many places with me. Part of why I have been able to read so much this year is because I have been able to have a book with me at all times, which is so easy when it is this small. It even fits in some big jacket pockets of mine. Its size is so much more convenient than a book or even a tablet, but it isn’t too small to read on either.

I am not going to lie; the colors it comes in definitely caught my attention when I was eyeballing the kindle online. The paperwhite comes in black, twilight blue, sage, and plum. It was difficult to narrow down the color I wanted, but I opted to go with the plum color, and it is gorgeous. I also opted to get the Amazon case for it, which reminds me of the super expensive Apple case people would buy to go with their iPad, but it was worth the extra money in my opinion (though I did use a coupon on it, which made me feel better). The case was made for this kindle, and it fits it perfectly. The kindle snaps into the hard shell of the case, and there is a flap that will put the kindle to sleep when it is closed. And guess what? It comes in the super pretty colors to match your kindle. Yes, I am a sucker for matching accessories, and I am not afraid to admit it. Though there are some other case options you could use, or not even use a case at all, I would recommend getting the Amazon case to accompany your kindle should you choose to buy it.

One of the specs that they emphasized when promoting this product was its battery life. I would say that the battery life is impressive, and I don’t have to worry about charging it every week or so, even when I read for longer stretches, like my trip to visit family in California (I did a lot of reading then). Though I think the battery would depend on how much you read, I can verify the claim that it lasts weeks rather than days. Not only that, but when its battery is running low, I have noticed that it is fast to charge, which is impressive.

Another feature I didn’t even realize I would want is its connection to Goodreads. I have had my account since middle school, and I love it. I believe every bookworm should have a Goodreads account to keep track of their books. When you open a book on the kindle for the first time, it opens a sidebar with a brief description of the book, about how long it would take for you to read (yes, this device actually learns your reading speed), and it updates the book as currently reading on your Goodreads shelves. It also updates the book as read once completed. Additionally, when you highlight the book (bonus of an e-reader – you can highlight your library books!) it saves your highlights under your Goodreads account so even after you have returned it you can look back on what you highlighted.

Though you can add notes, I mainly stick to highlighting, because a drawback of it not being a traditional screen is that it isn’t as sensitive or responsive to touch. Sometimes it isn’t as precise as a tablet would be, because sometimes it doesn’t select what you want to select, and sometimes it can be slow to respond. If you hold down and drag your finger across a paragraph, it is fairly easy to highlight that way, but it is more difficult to type. However, I bought this product because of its similar look to real paper, so I consider this a fair concession to make that doesn’t detract away from the overall experience. Plus, how much typing do you have to do on it anyways? Write in a notebook if you really want to.

There are so many countless benefits to an e-reader, even if you don’t get a Kindle Paperwhite. Not only does it save you money because online books are cheaper than physical books, but it also saves paper, and it saves space by storing hundreds of books on one device. However, I am sure you have heard these reasons before. Something people may not consider with e-readers is the ease of checking out books when you are away from your library. Being in college, it is so much easier to checkout eBooks from my library rather than worry about being home to return physical books. Additionally, I know I am less likely to have a book be overdue when I don’t have to worry about when I can physically return it to a library.

This is not a tablet or an iPad, it is just an e-reader, but it does its job well. If you want more out of one device, I recommend getting an iPad with a kindle app on it to read books. But, if you are like me and want an e-reader that doesn’t look like a screen, I think the Kindle Paperwhite is for you. To me, the impact it has had on my reading, as well as helping my goal of using my phone less is priceless. By being able to have a book with me at all times, I am able to reach for my kindle rather than my phone when I am bored or have downtime. It has also helped the ease with which I read by appealing to the traditional bookworm within me that prefers paper to screens.

You find the version I bought a year ago refurbished for about $100, or there are other paperwhite options out there depending on how new you want it and how much you want to spend.

Must Watch Christmas Movies and TV shows on Netflix

By Sofia Flores, Staff Photographer

I don’t know about y’all, but Christmas is definitely my favorite time of the year! What’s not to love about the smell of freshly baked Christmas cookies, dressing the beautifully bare evergreen tree, snowball fights, quality time with friends and family, and not to mention… CHRISTMAS DINNER! But the one thing that effortlessly gets me into the holiday spirit without a doubt is Christmas movies! Ever since I was a kid, every year I would look forward to gathering into the living room with my family and watching a classic like Home Alone or Elf.

Trust me…I know the struggle. It’s hard to find the perfect movie or TV show on Netflix. It’s like no matter how hard you look, you can never seem to find the perfect choice. It’s almost as if you wished you had a list you can turn to or some kind of generator…

That’s where I come in! Sadly, I do not have a Netflix Christmas Generator, but I do have a list! I have compiled a Christmas themed list filled with movies and TV shows that you MUST watch on Netflix. So, kick back, relax, grab a cozy blanket, your favorite snack, and enjoy!

When you need a laugh…

1.       Unaccompanied Minors

This film will always be a classic. If you love pure, innocent fun and mischievousness, then this is definitely the choice for you! If I could only explain it using a couple of phrases it would be airport, Christmas, group of kids, freedom, and trouble.

2.       Love Hard

I would hands down give this movie a 10000000/10. This movie made me laugh out loud about 20 times throughout the whole film. This is a movie that would make you do the same, guaranteed! Want a romantic comedy that is genuinely comedic? This is the perfect match for you!

3.       Let it Snow

I think this is a movie that we would all be able to relate to, no matter what situation you find yourselves in this Christmas. Not only does it include a great deal of laughs, but it also gives you a great message that you cannot miss. Of course, I can’t spoil that for you! I guess you’ll just have to watch to find out…

When you’re in the baking spirit…

1.       The Great British Baking Show:

Holidays I have to admit… I SUCK at baking. Unlike my boyfriend, I can never seem to have a successful baking attempt, even if I follow the directions step by step. However, one thing I am great at is watching baking shows. And what’s more perfect than watching Christmas baking shows!

2.       Sugar Rush: Christmas

If you like the first choice, then you’re definitely going to love this one! Let the Christmas Baking continue!

3.       The Great British Baking Show

I know, I know…this is not a Christmas themed show, but I just HAD to include this in our list, my friends. What’s one thing we instantly feel when it comes to Christmas: cozy! That’s exactly the vibes that this show gives off. Just picture it: fireplace crackling, you’re all wrapped up in your most soft blanket, hot chocolate in your hand, and The Great British Baking Show is playing on the TV. Who wouldn’t love this?

When you’re feeling in love…

1.       Dash & Lily

Dash & Lily is by far one of the most amazing treasures I have had the honor of stumbling upon. You’re probably thinking this is just another cheesy, rom com of a show. Well dear reader, I hate to be the one to tell you that you’re wrong. It’s a show that includes two perspectives of Christmas: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” and “It’s the worst time of the year.” If you’re looking for an intriguing, thrilling, romantic show; look no further!

2.       A Christmas Prince

Is this movie cheesy? Maybe a little bit. Is it amazing? Yes! Will it put you into the romantic Christmas Spirit? Heck yes! I admit, I was a bit skeptical when I first watched this movie but once I started watching it, I did not regret it a single bit. It’s a beautiful film that not only includes wonderful nuggets of wisdom, but a story of unexpected love!

3.       The Knight Before Christmas

This movie is definitely one of my favorite Christmas romance movies. It makes you fall in love with love, much like A Christmas Prince. Does that make sense? Probably not, but you get what I mean.

When you’re looking for something to enjoy with the family…

1.       Klaus

This film is a work of art, to say the least. The animation is absolutely beautiful, and the story line is even better. This is definitely a movie that you will enjoy with your family. It is the perfect way to keep the spirit of Christmas alive throughout the holiday season!

2.       The Princess Switch

One characteristic that is always correlated to the Christmas season is love. There is love being spread every second from partner to partner, friend to friend, and family to family. This movie is a perfect embodiment of that. It shows us that love is what connects us all together.

3.       The Holiday Calendar

This is a movie filled with…MAGIC! I have always thought of the Christmas season to be magical, and in this movie, it literally is! If there’s anything I have learned from this movie it's that there is always magic floating in the air, but it’s our job to notice it.
